WestCo makes a wonderfully small, lightweight dry cell battery for the Mazda Miata. It didn’t take long for enthusiasts with other cars to discover this battery and begin installing them in cars other than the Miata. The battery for the SE-R can be purchased directly from WestCo.

At NISsport, we also have been smitten with this wonderful little battery. It wasn’t long before we decided that despite its diminutive size, we still wanted to relocate it to the trunk for better weight distribution, and as a bonus, more space under the hood for our cold air intake system. The problem we ran into is that all of the conventional battery boxes are much too large for the WestCo. We wanted a small box for our small battery.

We searched for some time before locating a box of appropriate size. What you see here is the result of that search – a small, plastic box that is air tight that is almost the perfect size for this battery. It includes grommets for the cable holes to keep it airtight and uses two threaded rods to attach the battery and the box firmly to the car. This gives added protection that will prevent the battery from becoming loose should the box ever fail for any reason. The fact that the WestCo battery is a true dry cell battery allows us to mount it in any position, and in the NISsport battery box, we mount it on its side.

While the WestCo battery is a sealed battery that does not need to be vented, some sanctioning bodies or officials at driver education events may require the box to be vented anyway. For a small additional charge, we can include a venting kit with the battery box. It requires a small hole to be drilled in the box and a rigid tube epoxied in place to secure the vent hose to.
